ABOUT THE LOGO

Our Heritage – Our Future
A competition was held to encourage community input in developing the catch phrase which forms an integral part of the brand logo.  The phrase was created by Joy Robinson from Carterton, and was one of around 35 entries received by the Council offering a raft of 85 different catchphrases.

Judges, Garry Daniell from Mitre 10 and Craig Cooper from Trust House were impressed by the range of entries and particularly enjoyed the family submissions, the quirky text message presentation and submissions from schools.

They chose Our Heritage – Our Future as they felt it encompassed the theme they wanted to promote throughout the year.  “The sesqui anniversary provides an opportunity for reflection and commemoration – a chance to remember our past an dhow that has influenced where we are today.  It is also an opportunity for Masterton, as a community, to look forward and plan for the future”.

Mahara Onamata – Ahutahi Ki Mua
The 150th is also a commemoration of the early partnerships between local Maori and European settlers.  The Committee wanted to ensure that the logo recognised these relationships, and local iwi were asked to suggest a Maori equivalent of Our Heritage – Our Future.

‘Mahara onamata – ahutahi ki mua’ literally translates to ‘mindful of our past as we move into the future’.  This phrase conveys a number of messages and Maori values:

Mahara – to be mindful / to remember / memories
We each hold memories, individual and collective, happy and sad, that are important to us.  These memories have shaped who we are and where we have come from.

Onamata – days gone by / the past
Where we have been is just as important as where we are going.

Ahutahi – move as one / move together
This conveys the idea of unity.

Ki Mua - forward
Our future, and that of our children, is ahead of us.  Each step forward takes us that much closer to our dreams, aspirations and realities.
