Work Begins on New Airport
Earthworks have
begun on a new taxiway at Hood Aerodrome, in readiness for the
Masterton – Auckland air service beginning in February.
Bruce Buchanan
Ltd began work on the taxiway construction and associated works
last week, and D. Borman Ltd has the contract to build the new
terminal, says Mayor Garry Daniell. The works
involve the construction of a new terminal building together
with a carpark; the construction of a taxi-way from the existing
runway to the airport building; the construction of a hardstand
area for the aircraft to “overnight”; the installation of
airfield lighting and glide slope equipment (the latter enabling
pilots to ensure they are at the correct height, descent angle
and direction as they approach the airfield); the resurfacing of
the runway which is programmed maintenance rather than a
necessity because of the new usage of the airfield; and a range
of associated works. Mr Daniell said
the taxiway was due for completion before Christmas, and the
glide slope equipment had been ordered from Europe. “It’s full
steam ahead from here and once again I wish to extend thanks to
Masterton Licensing Trust, Wairarapa Building Society and
Carterton District Council for their generous support,” Mr
Daniell said. The first Eagle
Air flight is set down for Monday 16 February 2009.
