Global Day of Action on Climate Change
Saturday 6 December 2008 marks the annual
Global Day of Action on climate change.
The three Wairarapa councils are among 34
councils nationwide - representing over 83% of the population -
involved in the Communities for Climate Protection – New Zealand
Programme.
Masterton District Councillor Chris
Peterson said the CCP programme aimed to reduce our carbon
footprint by inspiring behaviour change in our communities.
“We are undertaking a variety of measures
to reduce our carbon footprint, which in turn will reduce carbon
dioxide concentrations.
“Our Wairarapa councils run energy
efficiency audits, participate in the Healthy Homes Scheme,
support Enviro-schools and give price incentives to encourage
waste reduction, re-use and recycling.
“Actions taken to reduce greenhouse gases
also reduce electricity costs, fuel costs, resource use costs
and waste disposal costs, bringing environmental benefits like
cleaner air and healthier communities, he added.
“As councils, we are playing our part, and
we look to businesses, civic organisations and all in our
communities to examine their activities and to work towards
reducing their own sources of emissions,” Mr Peterson said.
“Local government is actively taking a
lead in tackling climate change,” says Diana Shand, Communities
for Climate Protection – New Zealand National Programme
Manager. “This is a great opportunity to recognise the work
achieved, and the actions planned by councils. It also provides
an opportunity for the community to see where they can engage
and do their part to protect a changing climate.”
The Wairarapa councils are participating
in Communities for Climate Protection®
– New Zealand, a New Zealand Government initiative delivered by
ICLEI Oceania. This programme is part of ICLEI Oceania’s
international Cities for Climate Protection®
Campaign.
The Day of Action on climate change is
scheduled to coincide with the annual United Nations Climate
Change Conference being held this year in Poland, as a gesture
of support to the countries gathering from around the world to
discuss progress implementing the international climate
treaties.
