Treated Wastewater - A Resource
The urban
wastewater treatment upgrade has been given the all clear to
proceed, with consent conditions now finalised. The Council is
now looking at options for people to use the treated wastewater
as a resource before the final design is signed off, says
Masterton Mayor Garry Daniell.
The commissioners
finalised consent conditions last week.
“Their decision
provides the Council with the ability to affordably treat
Masterton’s effluent without adverse impacts on the environment
or relying on third party agreements,” Mr Daniell said.
Construction on
the upgrade is scheduled to begin in July 2010.
Submissions on
the upgrade were heard in March. Thirty-four submitters were
heard and the three commissioners spent three weeks in Hearings
before spending a month deliberating the evidence and arguments
put forward.
“The Council is
now asking for expressions of interest for use of the treated
wastewater as a resource – with the added benefit of further
reducing discharges into the river,” Mr Daniell said.
Documents regarding expressions of interest
and other information relating to the upgrade can be found here
