Submissions Called on Draft Wairarapa Alcohol Strategy
Wairarapa people are being asked to
comment on the Draft Wairarapa Alcohol Strategy, out now
for public consultation.
The three councils said in a joint
statement they welcomed the adoption of the draft strategy and
hoped the wider community would provide written feedback between
now and the end of the consultation period - January 29, 2010.
The strategy, compiled by the Wairarapa
Community Alcohol Action Group, looks at matters around alcohol;
including liquor licensing, host responsibility, and premises’
opening hours.
The strategy’s vision is to create
an environment in which alcohol related activities can be
enjoyed with minimal risk to the community.
The group began
work on the draft strategy early this year, with representatives
meeting regularly. Masterton councillor Jeff Workman liaised
with the Mayors of Carterton and South Wairarapa during the
development of the strategy.
Also involved were: Te Hauora Runanga o
Wairarapa, Ministry of Social Development, Wairarapa Road Safety
Council, NZ Police, Wairarapa Addiction Services and NZ
Hospitality Association.
Hearings and
deliberations on submissions to the Draft Wairarapa
Alcohol Strategy will be carried out by a joint committee of the
three councils.
Also out for
consultation at the same time is the Masterton District Council
Liquor Licensing Policy, which will go to licensed premises and
other agencies, as well as being available for public input.
Submissions on this close at the same time, January 29, 2010.
Both Carterton and South Wairarapa District Councils have
already adopted their liquor licensing policies.
Copies of the
Draft Wairarapa Alcohol Strategy can be found on each
council’s website and at libraries,
