Summer Stunner 2010

Summer Stunner Goes 'Kiwi Country'

One of New Zealand’s most respected and dynamic songwriter’s will feature at this year’s Summer Stunner on Wednesday 9th February. Barry Saunders is an iconic Kiwi minstrel and troubadour and is one of our most consistently successful recording artists, having sold over 100,000 albums with his band The Warratahs and his three solo albums.

Barry Saunders has won numerous awards, including 'Songwriter of the Year', 'Vocalist of the Year', and twice won 'Country Album of the Year'. His songs have been described as having a “rhythmic swagger” where he reflects the spirit of the New Zealand landscape. He has penned songs such as ‘Maureen’, ‘Hands of My Heart,’ ‘Rescue Me’ and ‘Fool’s Paradise’.

Barry has toured New Zealand and Australia extensively and has supported Bob Dylan, Jackson Browne and many others. He was also invited to perform at the prestigious South X Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas.

Barry Saunders new album 'Far As The Eye Can See', celebrates both art and music, with 14 New Zealand artists visually interpreting his songs. He will be accompanied at the Summer Stunner by the virtuoso violin playing of Nik Brown and sympathetic drumming of Caroline Easther.

Supporting the ‘down home’ feel of the evening will be the hugely entertaining Hot Club Sandwich. This Wellington-based three-piece play an eclectic mix of acoustic blues with loads of country and jazz thrown in for good measure.

Hot Club Sandwich play mostly original songs which poke fun at topical cultural themes. In fact humour plays a large part in their shows and they promise their audiences lots of fun, smiles and a damn fine time. They have been playing music together for nearly 20 years and released 7 CDs and a DVD.

At this year’s Summer Stunner, Masterton has the chance to welcome home in style the young local entertainer Cruize Karaitiana. He has been described as a young man on his way up in the music business and he will back up his recent appearance on national TV on the “Freshly Squeezed Talent” show broadcast on New Year’s Eve. Cruize made the top 4 in the text-vote competition.

The 2011 Summer Stunner will again be hosted by the smooth, polished style of Frankie Stevens.
Gates will open at 5.00pm with the show kicking off around 5.45pm. The usually balmy summer evening concert has become a popular social occasion, with many groups of friends and families opting to bring their own picnic tea and bottle of wine. 2011 is the 15th year in succession that Masterton District Council, with the funding assistance of Trust House and Masterton Trust Lands Trust, has run the two summer concerts. The Council is hoping for better weather than last year when a shower of rain at 4.30pm put quite a few people off attending, even though the rain stayed away for the show.

Tickets for Summer Stunner will remain at the great value of $10 per person and $5 for children (12 and under) and can be purchased at the gate. There will be no alcohol sales, but the Summer Stunner concert will have a BYO licence and food and drinks will be available for sale from local food vendors.

The Lady Killers - Back by Popular Demand for Summer Stunner 2010

The dream team of New Zealand’s finest female singers and entertainers are returning to the Summer Stunner’s big stage by popular demand. The Lady Killers are Tina Cross, Suzanne Lynch , Jackie Clarke and Taisha and they will headline the 2010 Summer Stunner concert in Masterton’s Colin Pugh Sportsbowl on Wednesday February 10th. They played the 2007 Stunner show and were a huge hit with the enthusiastic and receptive crowd. Two support acts have also been announced as Diamond Divas, a pop/soul duo from the Hutt Valley and Wairarapa’s own Verandah Band playing their distinctive take on some popular classics. The whole show will be hosted by the polished professionalism of regular Wairarapa visitor, Frankie Stevens.

The Lady Killer’s shows are known for their sophistication, glamour and gorgeous vocal harmonies. They revel in vocal traditions that span many musical genres, from cappella to girl groups, gospel to pop, r & b to country and a whole lotta Rock n Roll. Always performing with a cheeky wit and sense of fun, the Lady Killers have been described as seasoned performers, but Jackie Clarke’s more mischievous term is “hardy perennials”. “We are not pretending to be something we are not, we just sing whatever we want and have a ball, and if you like it too, that’s great!” said Clarke. The Lady Killers will be backed by a 4-piece band. Their 2010 Summer Stunner show will be a warm up for their much anticipated support slot with the legendary Tom Jones on his NZ tour later in February.

The Summer Stunner concert follows the night after the Summer Hummer, which will feature New Zealand’s most popular rock group of 2009 in Midnight Youth, fresh from the Big Day Out. The two shows are organised by the Masterton District Council, with further funding assistance from Trust House and the Masterton Trust Lands Trust. Council spokesperson David Paris said “The Lady Killers put on a stunning show for us three years ago and we received a huge amount of positive feedback. It is a great coup to be able to bring them back. The top line up of talent over two nights will surely raise the bar again for these unique and much anticipated shows.” The Council and community funding go towards keeping the ticket prices well below the usual cost of shows where such top artists perform.

Summer Stunner 2010 gates will open at 5.00pm with the Verandah Band kicking off around 5.45pm. The usually balmy summer evening concert has become a popular social occasion, with many groups of friends and families opting to bring their own picnic tea and bottle of wine. 2010 is the 14th year in succession that the Masterton District Council has run the summer concerts and the Council is hoping this year’s shows attract good numbers of people because it wants assurance that there is support for using rates money to subsidise these community events.

Tickets for Summer Stunner will be $10 per person and $5 for children (12 and under) and can be purchased at the gate. There will no alcohol sales, but the Summer Stunner concert will have a BYO licence and food and drinks will be available for sale from local food vendors.
