Our Future Masterton: Ahutahi ki mua - Moving Forward Together
Masterton District Council has committed to a citizen-led strategy for
the reimagining and rejuvenation of Masterton CBD. The vision is focused on
a strong citizen contribution to a 50-year vision for the Masterton CBD —
the objective is simple: wide community ownership and contribution of the
possibilities for change.
In late 2016 ‘Discovery workshops’ and many stakeholder meetings were
held to understand the context that assists in the public reimagining and
rejuvenation of Masterton’s town centre as a living space for all. The
programme is being facilitated independently by the 2016 workshop’s
creators, celebrated national public art and urban revitalisation project
Letting Space and
Toi Aria: Design for Public Good.
The 2016 workshops engaged with a broad spectrum of people from Masterton
community, including: Masterton businesses, community groups, Māori and
youth, the recreational sector and Masterton District Councilors. These
provided strong insight of what Masterton people see as important and areas
of opportunities for focus in future development. This work provides a good
grounding for further engagement and exploration for reimagining and
rejuvenation of Masterton CBD.
The programme of work for 2017
The organisers say ‘Our Future Masterton’ will continue to meet and
workshop with Masterton people to begin to form tangible perspectives of
ways in which to bring the CBD, and surrounding areas, to life. This process
will explore opportunities for further development and engagement with a
wide cohort of people, particularly those who haven’t as yet engaged with
this project to ensure we are moving forward together.
Our Future Masterton will also include this year a physical ‘Our
Future Masterton’ Hub: located in the CBD, a hands-on temporary
interactive space is being built so people can share ideas for the future,
comment on other past and present ideas and explore potential areas of
physical spatial change in the CBD – through both displays and
mini-workshops, using creative material to stimulate discussion.
Also, as part of this project Urban Dream Brokerage have an
opportunity for the appointment of a local broker to help co-ordinate
initiatives, on the ground. The job description is available online at
Urban Dream Brokerage brokers use vacant commercial space for innovative
ideas generated by the community, encouraging the revitalisation of CBDs and
testing out new uses for public areas.
