New playground opened on first day of school holidays

Masterton Mayor Bex Johnson has officially opened a brand-new accessible playground in Solway, Masterton, on the first day of school holidays.

Development of Riverstone Playground was part of the 2024-34 Long-Term Plan (LTP), and involved consultation with the Solway Residents’ Association, Masterton Primary School, Wairarapa College Supported Learning Centre, and iwi.

The playground has an aeronautical theme, with a ‘plane’ providing numerous interactive play opportunities, and a rubberised surface used extensively to enhance accessibility.

Iwi advice noted the site is within the area known as Purata - “the flowering rātā tree” - and there are records of previous wetlands.

To represent this history, the playground features hidden insect creatures for users to discover.

It includes an accessible seesaw, monkey bars, hanging grips, swings (toddler, standard, basket), a multi-level climbing structure, and a climbing wall.

“This is a fantastic addition to our network of playgrounds, and I am sure it will be very well used for a long time,” the Mayor said.

“This Council is committed to delivering for everyone in our community, and that includes our younger citizens.”
