The newly-released floorplan for the refurbished and expanded Masterton District Library reveals a modern, welcoming community hub with increased accessibility and community facilities.
The project, Breathing new life into our whare pukapuka, is creating an enhanced new library over two levels – with lift access. The layout includes:
Ground floor
- Main library shelving – layout redesigned for ease of access and browsing.
- Reading room – a research space providing convenient access to Masterton's local history and heritage collections.
- Programme room – dedicated space for regular library programmes, workshops and events supporting both library-led and partner programmes, e.g. Storytime, Chess Club, Digital Seniors.
- Children's area – A dedicated children's space that opens directly onto an outdoor play area, encouraging learning, exploration, and play both inside and outside.
- Meeting rooms – Bookable private meeting rooms for up to four people, and a larger meeting room for 12-plus people.
- Accessibility – lift, accessible toilets, and a mobility scooter charging point.
- Coffee kiosk – to be operated by a local Masterton business (yet to go out to tender), creating an inviting social space with access to the refurbished outside park.
Mezzanine
- Masterton Trust Lands Trust Community Classroom – supporting community-led learning and skill sharing Later this year, the community will be invited to help shape the programmes and activities offered in this space, with their feedback informing how it is fitted out and equipped.
- Masterton Trust Lands Trust Community Lounge – Comfortable, flexible shared space for meetings, private meeting booth, hotdesking. The lounge will provide a welcoming place where people can spend time, work from the library, or meet up and study.
Library manager Tiffany Rawlings is delighted to share the new floorplan publicly.
“We're creating more than a library, we’re creating a purposed-built space that reflects our community and designed around how people learn, connect, and spend time together,” she said.
Work is underway on the library refurbishment and expansion project, with the new library to open in spring next year.
