The foolish and dangerous felling of three healthy mature trees at Henley Lake over the weekend has cost the Masterton community an estimated $3-5000.
Masterton District Council has advised the Police of the vandalism, which has destroyed the climbing frame at Henley Lake and put both the vandals and members of the public in danger.
“It is clear from the inept way the trees were cut that the person or people responsible had little knowledge of safe tree removal practices and were fortunate not to injure themselves or a member of the public,” Council Group Manager Infrastructure Tyler Ross said.
“We have had no reports of chainsaw activity at night, so it is possible someone may have seen who was responsible. Anyone with any information should contact the Council or the Police.
“With the cost of tree removal, site tidy-up, and removal of the climbing frame, now required after it was hit by a tree, ratepayers are likely to incur costs of between $3,000 and $5,000. The climbing frame is unlikely to be replaced in the short-term – there is simply no budget for this work.
“Henley Lake belongs to the community – vandalism like this is senseless and dangerous. As a community, we should not tolerate it.
“The only legitimate use of a chainsaw in any Council park is carried out by Council contractors, who will provide identification, if asked.
“If people have any doubt about activity in parks, they should contact the Council.”
