$200,000 Investment to Enhance Queen Street and Support Local Business
“Council is investing significantly below ground to renew core infrastructure. This fund creates an opportunity for building owners to invest above ground - lifting shopfronts, restoring character, and improving the overall customer experience.”
Mayor Bex Johnson said the fund signals confidence in Masterton’s future.
“This is about backing our local businesses and backing our town centre,” Mayor Johnson said.
“Queen Street is the heart of our community. When it thrives, Masterton thrives. By partnering with business owners to lift the presentation and vibrancy of our CBD, we’re investing in jobs, local enterprise and the long-term prosperity of our district.”
Research consistently shows that attractive, well-maintained town centres increase dwell time, support local spending, and build business confidence. Council expects the fund to leverage private investment well beyond the $200,000 committed.
Eligible projects may include:
- Restoration of original architectural features
- Parapet reinstatement
- New or improved verandahs
- External painting in heritage or complementary colours
- External lighting
- Removal of redundant signage
- Relocation of equipment such as air conditioning units
- Repairs and maintenance that include aesthetic upgrades
Applications open Monday 30 March and must be approved before work begins.
The fund will operate as a pilot through to June 2027 and will be reviewed as part of the 2027–37 Long-Term Plan process to assess uptake, economic impact and return on investment.
“This is about partnership and momentum,” Mr Fell said.
“When businesses invest alongside Council, the benefits compound - stronger retail performance, increased visitor appeal, and greater pride in our town centre. That’s good for business, good for jobs, and good for Masterton.”
