The Masterton District is a great place to do business and we want to make it as easy as possible for people to set up a business here.

There are different rules and regulations to comply with so talk with us before you get started. We can let you know what you need to do before you open your doors to customers.

Read the Information Guide (PDF, 717KB), fill in a business information form and our advisor will create a detailed report outlining the applications you might need for your new business venture.

TK's Gourmet Kitchen

Kev and Trac used the TCOB service to get their food truck up and running. Living on the Wairarapa coast, they love the great outdoors and creating delicious meals from what they catch and harvest. Tracy had years of experience in commericial kitchens so it was a no-brainer to start their own business selling perfect pastries with a point of difference. You can find them in the carpark at Hunting and Fishing, Masterton or visit their website.

Brownbutter Bakery

Jime and Zoe have worked in top flight kitchens around the world. They wanted to create their own place, the Brownbutter Bakery, where they could serve seasonal menus that change regularly and fresh baked goods every day. Everything is made from scratch and where possible, from locally sourced ingredients. You can find them at the Masterton Golf Club, 1 Boltons Road or visit their Facebook page.

There are lots of legal requirements when you open a new business. Talking to us early means we can help you figure out what you need and get it moving.

Depending on your type of business you might need to work with multiple teams from health, to building and planning to get your doors open.

By filling in just one application, our business support advisor will create a report that tells you:

  • all the consents and licences you need,
  • how long these will take to process and,
  • they will help you make your applications in the right order to makes things faster and easier.

The process is treated as commercially sensitive to ensure confidentiality.

This form is the easiest way to make sure you know exactly what you need to get your doors open. You'll receive a detailed report within 10 days that tells you the applications you'll need and how long they will take to process. The process is designed to help you plan ahead, prevent any hold ups and comply with laws and regulations.

That's no worries, if you complete an application and then decide not to go ahead with your business idea, just let us know and we can cancel your application. There's no fee for this service.

If your existing business is making any of the below changes to your current business, you would need to go through the Taking Care of Business process.

  • If there is a significant change in the operation of the business/ layout / renovations
  • If the business is changing ownership
  • Adding additional licences
  • Changing from retail to sit business- more customers on-site.
  • Moving location
