A new fully-accessible bridge to Park Island in Masterton’s Lake of Remembrance has been officially opened by Mayor Bex Johnson.
The bridge was included in the 2024-34 Long-Term Plan and constructed with a budget of approximately $210,000.
The existing bridge, built in the early 1960s, will remain next to the new bridge. However, it is difficult for people with mobility issues to use, and because it is narrow, proved to be a significant congestion point when Council previously held major events on the island with high attendance levels.
Its steepness also provided challenges for the Masterton Miniature Train Society transporting coal to the island.
The bridge is located close to the existing bridge making use of existing crossing barriers and lights.
“This is an iconic spot and this little bridge has no doubt been much photographed over the years,” Mayor Johnson said.
“But we wanted to make Park Island a place for everyone. We now have a fully accessible bridge that will allow the island to be used as it was meant to be – by everyone in the community. And we’re retaining its predecessor for those keen to take an alternative route.”
