While it’s a relief to see the rain beginning to ease, it’s important that our communities do not become complacent.

We are seeing an increase in people ignoring signage and warnings around flooding and attempting to drive or walk through flooded areas. This not only puts them at risk, but also places our response teams in danger, with several rescues already required. Please pay attention to signage, remain aware of your surroundings, and act safely to protect yourself and others.

A key focus for our Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) today is supporting the welfare of those impacted, particularly those who are cut off or in need of additional assistance. Our welfare team is actively responding to community requests. If you, or someone you know, requires urgent welfare support, you can call there welfare line on 0800 CD Wai (0800 239 247), where staff are able to support.

As the day progresses, we expect to receive further reports of damage across the region. If you are travelling, please remain vigilant. If you notice anything hazardous, report it to your local council.

While river levels remain high following overnight rain, the network is coping within capacity, and we are beginning to see gradual reductions in water levels in some areas. Our teams will continue to closely monitor river conditions.

Power has been restored to many properties that were affected yesterday, with around 180 properties still without electricity. Powerco is working to restore supply as quickly as possible.

There are ongoing impacts across the Wairarapa roading network. Please continue to check your local council’s website and Facebook page for local road updates, and NZTA for state highway information. Some rural areas, particularly in South Wairarapa, remain isolated due to flooding and road closures.

Following the Turanganui Bridge washout yesterday, crews are sourcing materials and will begin repairs once river levels recede. This work is expected to take several days, with reopening anticipated toward the end of the week. Please do not travel to the area or approach the bridge, as the site remains unstable. Police will be on site to encourage the community to adhere to this safety advice.

Access to Martinborough is available via Longbush road - other access routes are not currently accessible.
