The first 16 mural panels painted by Masterton District schools have been unveiled by Mayor Bex Johnson on the hoarding surrounding the construction site for the new Masterton District Library.
The library is undergoing refurbishment and expansion, set to be complete in spring/summer 2027.
“The library project - Breathing new life into our whare pukapuka - is very exciting but let’s be honest, the wall around the site was pretty dull,” the Mayor said.
“All the schools in our district were invited to paint a mural panel to bring some life to the wall and the results are outstanding.”
Mayor Johnson thanked Guthrie Bowron Masterton and Dulux, who provided paint for the project, and Brosnan, who are leading the construction project, and who provided the panels.
“Schools and staff have really embraced the idea,” she said.
“It shows the creativity we have among our young people and it gives them a connection to a project that will deliver more than a library. It will be a purposed-built space that reflects our community and is designed around how people learn, connect, and spend time together.
“I’m sure many of the artists who have produced these murals will make use of the fantastic space for years to come.”
In total, around 20 panels will feature on the wall.
