As part of the Breathing Life into Our Whare Pukapuka project, Masterton District Council is inviting community members to design bookshelf end panels that will be installed in the new Masterton District library when it opens in spring/summer 2027.
The invitation is open to members of the community and community groups to submit a design that reflects who they are, their heritage, and the stories that matter to them.
“Masterton is proud to be home to people of many backgrounds and identities,” says Library Services Manager Tiffany Rawlings. “We wanted to create an exciting opportunity to bring to life and showcase the diverse cultures and communities that make up Masterton.
"We want our new library to be a place where all of sectors of our community are represented and can see themselves reflected. Showcasing their stories, interests or identities through iconography, design and artwork is an exciting way to achieve that.
"Many communities have art or iconography that represents who they are, and we want to reflect this as part of a welcoming place for everyone," she said.
Submissions are now open and will close on 30 November. Designs can be submitted via the online application form or through a paper form available from the temporary Masterton District library on Chapel Street or from the council’s Lincoln Road customer service centre at Waiata House.
"There are a few guidelines people will need to stick to, but we're excited to see the designs that come through and find ways we can bring them to life in our new library space," Rawlings said.
