Speed limit signs are being installed on beaches at Riversdale and Castlepoint to remind users that motor vehicles are subject to the same limits as on roads in the settlements.
Beaches are legally roads, and will feature 30km speed limit signs, as the surrounding roads do.
During consultation on speed limits, both communities were keen to have speed limits reinforced on beaches.
Masterton District Council Roading Services Manager Kaine Jaquiery said the signs did not reflect a change in legislation.
“We are reminding people that care is required when motor vehicles of any kind are used on beaches. The 30km/h limit is certainly not a target – increased care, and lower speeds, must be used when people are on the beaches, particularly with summer on the way,” he said.
