Expressions of interest sought for Kids Own playground refresh project

‘We want wow!’ is the message to potential tenderers hoping to pass muster to submit design and build proposals for the refresh of Masterton’s Kids Own playground.

The first stage of the tender process calls for expressions of interest from teams with suitable “capability, capacity, systems and experience”.

Up to three teams will then be invited to submit concept designs and pricing information as part of stage two of the tender process.

Expressions of interest are required by 6 October 2026, with the successful tenderer scheduled to be chosen in December.

The vision for the project calls for a space that ‘creates a sense of wonder’, in young and old.

“We want to create a unique and inclusive play space that celebrates and reflects the identity of Masterton and the wider Wairarapa.

“A place that inspires wonder, adventure and connection and encourages generations of children and families to play, explore, challenge themselves and create lasting memories.”

The new playground space should reflect Masterton and the Wairarapa, with play opportunities that encourage adventure and challenge users.

It should also be a space the whole family can enjoy and provide an engaging experience for future generations long into the future.

“The current Kids Own is a destination attraction for families around Wairarapa and beyond,” Council project manager Laura Maclean said.

“We want the new playground to continue that legacy of providing a brilliant space for young and old to enjoy.”

Masterton District Council has budgeted $1.5 million for its share of the project, and the Rotary Club of Masterton South will lead public fundraising, as it did for the current playground in 1999.

Rotary’s public fundraising will supplement the Council’s core contribution of $1.5m for the new playground and will aim to lift play equipment beyond the standard fare, with a focus on ensuring maximum accessibility.
