New policy aims to help build business buzz
A new policy aimed at boosting the buzz in commercial areas by allowing use of public spaces outside shops and cafes in Queen Street, Kuripuni, and Lansdowne has been adopted by Masterton District Council.
The Use of Public Places by Adjoining Business Premises Policy sets out requirements for businesses wanting to use public space, including carparks.
Commercial use of public spaces through the likes of outdoor dining, sale of goods, and other activities, can add to the vibrancy of commercial centres, and was highlighted by the community when the Council consulted on the Development Plan project, Our Future Our Story.
The new Policy will enable such activities while maintaining public safety, and safeguarding accessibility, amenity values, and fair competition.
Businesses with existing outdoor elements on public spaces will have six months from 1 October 2026 to apply for approval to continue the activity. New applications are open now.
While all intended use of public space will require an application and approval by the Council, an application fee will only apply if the use involves a semi-permanent or permanent structure, outdoor dining, impacts parking, or requires a liquor licence.
Mayor Bex Johnson said the Council was committed to enabling businesses to thrive.
“We want public spaces that are enjoyable, safe, and engaging for all parts of our community.
“By allowing businesses to utilise the public spaces right outside, we can help build a buzz around our town centre spaces, which are looking great as our CBD upgrade continues.”
The Use of Public Places by Adjoining Business Premises Policy is available on the Council website.
