A new 12 metre sign, 2.1 metres high, will welcome visitors to Masterton at the northern end of town providing a gateway to the spruced-up CBD.
The sign is a collaboration between Masterton Trust Lands Trust (MTLT), Trust House Foundation, and Masterton District Council and will be installed next to MTLT’s “Field of Champions” sheep art installation.
Tailor-made for selfies, the new sign will encourage travellers to pause for a photo and explore the area, with a map highlighting local attractions and experiences, encouraging people to spend time in town.
Andrew Croskery, General Manager Masterton Trust Lands Trust said he was excited to see another feature added to the site.
"The sheep sculptures have become a real talking point for people who stop and walk through the area. With the new sign’s proximity to State Highway 2, we’re hoping for even more visitors to stop and explore what Masterton has to offer," he said.
Masterton Mayor Bex Johnson said she was excited to see the project come to life.
"We are being bold about who we are and what we have to offer. So many people drive along State Highway 2 and completely miss stopping in Masterton and discovering everything we have to offer. We frequently heard from Golden Shears visitors, particularly those from out of town, that they didn't realise how much there is to see and do here. We wanted something eye-catching that would encourage people to stop and explore our town," she said.
“We are also encouraging visitors – and locals – to download the Discover Whakaoriori app, which includes a wide range of activities, information, and interactive walks to do in Masterton, and will continue to be populated with activities as time goes on. The app is completely free and requires no sign-up to use.”
Lucy Griffiths, Chair of the Trust House Foundation, said the project follows similar initiatives in other towns, which have successfully attracted visitors and generated community pride.
"Creating a photo opportunity like this and opening visitors' eyes to everything available in Masterton is exciting. From pools, playgrounds and parks to museums and events, there's always something happening here. This sign will create another point of connection for visitors."
Installation of the sign is scheduled to begin on Monday 9 November, weather dependent. The sign will also be connected to LED lighting that can be illuminated in a range of colours to support community initiatives, awareness campaigns, and special events across the district. Contact details and how to book illumination of the sign will be added to the Masterton District Council website in due course.
