Trail Network Condition Warning

Masterton's trail network has taken a battering over the past couple of weeks, and we want trail users to be aware of the current conditions before heading out.

Recent weather has caused significant damage to sections of the network, and we're asking everyone using the trails — walkers, runners, cyclists, and riders alike — to take extra care and use their own judgement on the state of the paths.

Why we haven't closed the trails

With hundreds of access points across the network, formally closing the trails isn't practical. We have coned off some of the worst-affected sections to warn users, but unfortunately several of these have been thrown into the river, lake, or surrounding bush by some members of our community.

Why repairs are on hold

Current weather means any repair work carried out now would either wash away or turn to porridge, so we're holding off on quick fixes. Instead, we've asked our contractors to prepare long-term solutions that will hold up once conditions settle.

What we're asking of trail users

• Take care and stay alert to changing ground conditions, particularly near waterways and on slopes
• Avoid sections that look unstable, eroded, or unsafe, even if they aren't formally marked
• Keep an eye out for coned-off areas, and treat any missing cones as a sign condition may have worsened, not improved
• Report any hazards you come across so we can track the worst-affected areas, either by calling Council, or through the Antenno app
