Public Notice on the right to demand a poll on electoral system
PUBLIC NOTICE OF RIGHT TO DEMAND A POLL ON ELECTORAL SYSTEM FOR MASTERTON DISTRICT COUNCIL, MASTERTON COMMUNITY TRUST, MASTERTON TRUST LANDS TRUST, MONTFORT TRIMBLE FOUNDATION
If Masterton District Council is required to hold an election in 2028, notice is given under section 28 of the Local Electoral Act 2001 that Masterton District Council will continue to use the First Past the Post (FPP) electoral system for the 2028 triennial election.
Notice is also given under section 28(1) of the Local Electoral Act 2001 that electors of each of the issues listed above have the right to demand a poll on the electoral system to be used at the next two triennial general elections (2028 and 2031).
The choice is between the First Past the Post (FPP) and the Single Transferable Vote (STV) electoral systems.
Unless a poll determines otherwise, the FPP electoral system will continue to be used for the issues listed:
- Masterton District Council
- Masterton Community Trust
- Masterton Trust Lands Trust
- Montfort Trimble Foundation
A valid demand for a poll must be:
- Made in writing.
- Signed by at least 5 percent of eligible electors of the relevant area:
- Masterton District Council will require a minimum of 1,006 elector signatures.
- Masterton Community Trust will require a minimum of 959 elector signatures.
- Masterton Trust Lands Trust will require a minimum of 794 elector signatures.Montfort Trimble Foundation will require a minimum of 356 elector signatures.
- Delivered to the office of the Masterton District Council, 27 Lincoln Road, Masterton by 4.00 pm Friday 11 December 2026.
Every elector who signs a demand must also set out in it his or her full name and the address for which he or she is qualified as an elector of the relevant area.
If a valid demand for a poll is received by 11 December 2026, the poll will be held no later than 28 March 2027 and will have effect for the 2028 and 2031 elections. If the valid demand for a poll is received after 11 December 2026, then the poll will be held after 28 March 2027, and will have effect for the 2031 and 2034 elections.
