Taking care of our waterways

Unlike wastewater, stormwater doesn't get treated at a treatment plant, so whatever goes into the drain will end up in the nearest stream or river. Pollution from stormwater can affect waterways but there are some simple things you can do to help.

Washing your car

If you normally wash your car on the driveway, the detergent might be making its way into a drain. If you have access, wash your car on the lawn so the soil can filter the dirt and wash liquid. You could also visit a drive thru car wash. You should also fix any oil leaks right away.

Paper and rubbish

Litter will eventually find its way into streams or waterways.  This could be flyers from your mailbox, cigarette butts, food wrappers or something escaping a trailer on the way to the tip. Be a tidy Kiwi - take rubbish home with you, put it in a bin, and pick up anything that's lying around.

Paints

Paint, solvents and water from washing brushes should never be tipped down the drain. You can use the two bucket method explained in this brochure from Tasman District Council, or make sure the water is emptied onto the lawn. Leftover paint can be taken to the transfer station.

Picking up dog poo

Dog poo adds nutrients to waterways that promote weed growth, choking the wildlife that live there. Take bags with you and pick up after your pooch.
