You must be a New Zealand Citizen and your name must be on the Parliamentary Electoral Roll (anywhere in New Zealand).

You can stand in the General Ward, OR the Māori Ward OR At Large.

You need to be nominated by two electors on the roll where you are standing;

Note that you do not need to be on the Māori roll or of Māori descent to stand in the Māori ward.

Although you can only stand for one ward or At Large, you can stand for a ward or At Large and ALSO stand for the Mayor.

Council is required to consider its representation arrangements at least every six years to ensure there is effective representation for its communities of interest. This includes the number of councillors, how many people one councillor represents and who gets to vote for them.

At the last review, Council decided that Masterton District Council should have one Māori ward, one General Ward and also some members elected at large (that is, not elected from either of the wards). Each of these covers the whole geographical area of the Masterton District.

Nominations are now closed.

The process involves:

• Completing an official nomination form and sending to the council’s electoral officer.
• Securing nominations from two people. Candidates cannot nominate themselves, and people who nominate candidates must be over 18 years old and enrolled to vote in the area the candidate is planning to stand.
• Candidates consenting to their nomination going forward.
• A $200 deposit being paid, which may be refunded depending on the election results.
• Candidates being New Zealand citizens who are over 18 years old and enrolled to vote.
